Self-Hosted Moveworks Alternative

Moveworks is an AI assistant for employee support: staff ask for help with IT, HR, finance or facilities requests, and the assistant searches company knowledge, resolves routine requests and files tickets in systems such as ServiceNow, Workday and Jira. ServiceNow completed its acquisition of Moveworks on 15 December 2025, and the product is now marketed as Moveworks by ServiceNow. It is hosted on AWS in regional instances (US, EU, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan and US GovCloud), and Moveworks GovCloud received FedRAMP Moderate authorization in February 2026 (verified October 2026).

Why teams migrate

Why enterprises look beyond Moveworks

The ServiceNow deal changed the buying conversation. A team that chose Moveworks as a neutral front door over several back-office systems now renews with a company that also sells one of the service desks the assistant sits in front of. That makes it a natural moment to reopen a question many security teams had parked: should the assistant that reads every password reset, leave query and access request run in a vendor cloud at all? The self-hosted route keeps the employee-facing assistant, the knowledge it answers from and the ticket history it reads on servers you operate.

01

Employee data in a vendor cloud

Support conversations carry more personal detail than most systems: sick leave, payroll queries, device serial numbers, access requests and the occasional complaint about a manager. Moveworks keeps that data inside its AWS region, yet it is still processed outside your network, which is exactly the point some works councils, hospitals and public bodies cannot accept.

02

The front door now belongs to an ITSM vendor

If tickets live in Jira Service Management, Freshservice or a tool you built, the assistant in front of them is now owned by a competitor of that tool. Moveworks still connects to other service desks, but ServiceNow says it is folding the assistant into the ServiceNow AI Platform, and an independent layer you host keeps that roadmap question in your hands.

03

No say over the models

Moveworks picks and runs the language models behind its Reasoning Engine, and its security page does not name them. A hosted assistant gives you no setting to choose a model, keep inference on your own GPUs, or force sensitive queues such as HR casework onto local models only.

Fair assessment

When Moveworks is the right choice

An honest alternative page tells you when not to migrate. Stay with Moveworks when:

  • You already run ServiceNow and want the employee assistant, enterprise search and workflows bought, integrated and supported by one vendor.
  • You need a FedRAMP Moderate authorized assistant for a US federal workforce and would rather not operate the stack yourself.
  • Your IT and HR teams want a large catalogue of ready-made agents and connectors switched on quickly, and processing in a regional AWS instance is acceptable.

Migration path

How teams move off Moveworks

Step 1

Export six months of request categories from the service desk and pick the three request types with the highest volume and the clearest documented answers, for example password resets, VPN set-up and leave balances.

Step 2

Install VDF AI on your own servers or private cloud, sign staff in through Microsoft Entra ID (other identity providers via an SSO-aware reverse proxy), and index the IT runbooks and HR handbook with their source permissions.

Step 3

Register the service desk API as a governed tool for the service desk agent, and put a human approval step in front of any ticket it would create, reprioritise or reassign.

Step 4

Run both assistants on the pilot request types, compare resolved and escalated requests using the audit logs, then move the remaining request types ahead of the Moveworks renewal date.

FAQ

Moveworks alternative questions

Is Moveworks still sold after the ServiceNow acquisition?

Yes. ServiceNow closed the acquisition on 15 December 2025 and sells the product as Moveworks by ServiceNow; its February 2026 FedRAMP announcement says the platform is available standalone to public-sector agencies, not only to ServiceNow customers. ServiceNow says it is bringing the Moveworks assistant, enterprise search and Reasoning Engine into the ServiceNow AI Platform (verified October 2026).

Can Moveworks run on-premises?

Moveworks documents hosting on AWS in regional instances, including a dedicated US GovCloud environment, and does not describe an on-premises or air-gapped installation (checked October 2026). When support conversations must stay on your own hardware, the alternative is an employee support assistant you run yourself, such as VDF AI agents serving open-weight models on your servers.

Does VDF AI work with ServiceNow or Jira Service Management?

Any service desk with an HTTP API can be registered in VDF AI as a tool with its own permissions and audit logging, so the service desk agent reads and updates tickets wherever they live, ServiceNow and Jira Service Management included. For Jira Cloud sites there is also a native connector that signs in with an Atlassian account.

What does a self-hosted employee support assistant cost?

On-premises, VDF AI is licensed per seat in fixed annual Seat Bundles, each seat covering the full platform, and the licence never meters model tokens. Deployments can begin with a three-month platform trial, so the pilot request types are proven on your hardware before you sign. GPU and server costs sit with you and scale with model size and the number of people asking at once.
