Palantir AIP Alternative for Sovereign Enterprise AI

Palantir sells Foundry, a data integration and operations platform built around an Ontology that models an organisation’s objects, relationships and actions; AIP, which adds LLM-powered workflows, agents and evaluations on top of that Ontology through tools such as AIP Logic and AIP Chatbot Studio; Gotham for defence and intelligence work; and Apollo, which deploys and updates the software across cloud, on-premises, classified and air-gapped environments. Few vendors match its record in large government and industrial programmes.

Why enterprises look beyond Palantir

Deployment is not why buyers look for Palantir alternatives: Apollo already ships Foundry and AIP into on-premises, classified and disconnected networks. The debate, loudest in Europe, is about dependence. A Swiss Armed Forces assessment presented to the army chief in December 2024, and reported by the magazine Republik a year later, warned that sensitive data could be reachable by US authorities and said the army should consider alternatives; the defence department called it a precautionary risk assessment. German states have split over police use of Palantir software, and in June 2026 the UK government confirmed it is reviewing whether to use the 2027 break clause in NHS England’s Federated Data Platform contract. For an organisation whose goal is governed AI agents over the systems it already runs, rather than a new data operating layer, a smaller platform it installs and controls can be the better fit.

01

Sovereignty covers the supplier, too

On-premises hosting settles where the data sits, not who builds, updates and supports the software around it. Several European public bodies have concluded that relying on one US vendor for core analysis is itself the risk, whatever the hosting model.

02

A platform larger than the job

Foundry and AIP pay off when an organisation commits to modelling its operations in the Ontology. If the aim is assistants, document Q&A and agents working across existing databases and tools, that commitment adds cost and time without adding much.

03

Contract size and exit cost

Public contracts such as NHS England’s, awarded in 2023 for up to £330 million over seven years, show the scale involved. Once workflows depend on a platform-specific data model, switching means rebuilding them; a seat-licensed platform that reads systems in place keeps that cost low.

When Palantir is the right choice

An honest alternative page tells you when not to migrate. Stay with Palantir when:

  • You need to integrate dozens of operational systems into one modelled, continuously updated view of assets, orders, patients or units. That is Foundry’s core job, and VDF AI does not replace it.
  • You run defence, intelligence or classified programmes where Palantir’s accreditations, cleared staff and fielded track record are part of the requirement.
  • Your Ontology is already built and paying off, and AIP adds LLM features on top of it without moving data again.
  • Your sovereignty assessment has accepted Palantir’s on-premises or classified deployment, and the open questions are about features rather than control.
Capability mapping

Palantir → VDF AI, capability by capability

Capability Palantir VDF AI
Core purpose Data integration and an operational Ontology across the enterprise Governed AI agents, assistants and private RAG over the systems you already run
Deployment Cloud, on-premises, classified and air-gapped through Apollo On-premises, private cloud or air-gapped, installed on infrastructure you own
Data model Ontology of objects, links and actions No ontology layer; agents query databases, documents and APIs where they already live
Agents and LLM workflows AIP Logic, AIP Chatbot Studio (formerly AIP Agent Studio) and AIP Evals Agents built from chat or a form, multi-agent networks, human approval steps
Models A range of LLMs selectable per use case Open-weight models on your GPUs through VDF AI Router; cloud APIs only where policy allows
Audit Platform lineage and granular permissions Audit log per run: input, retrieval hits, tool calls, model response and output
Commercial model Large enterprise contracts, often multi-year Fixed annual Seat Bundles on-premises, starting with a three-month platform trial
Migration path

How teams move off Palantir

Step 1

Separate the workloads: data integration and Ontology-backed operational apps on one side, LLM assistants, document Q&A and task agents on the other. Only the second group is in scope.

Step 2

Install VDF AI on your own servers or in an air-gapped enclave, register local models in VDF AI Router, and connect the databases and document stores those agents need, with read-only credentials at first.

Step 3

Rebuild each AIP workflow as a VDF AI agent or network, require human approval before any write-back, and compare its outputs with the existing workflow on the same cases.

Step 4

Move users once the results hold, and keep Foundry wherever it remains the integration backbone; the two can run side by side.

FAQ

Palantir alternative questions

What are the best Palantir alternatives for government agencies?

It depends on which part of Palantir is being replaced. Data integration and investigative analysis call for a data platform; AI assistants and agents raise a different question, which is who controls the software, the models and the logs. VDF AI installs on agency servers or in air-gapped networks, runs open-weight models locally and keeps audit records in the agency’s own systems. It holds no government authorisation of its own, so the deployment sits inside the agency’s existing accreditation scope.

Is there a European alternative to Palantir?

For data analysis, European agencies weigh several regional vendors and open-source stacks, and the right choice depends on the workload. VDF AI covers the AI layer: assistants, private RAG and governed agents running entirely on infrastructure you own, with models you choose, so operating it does not require the vendor to reach into your network.

Can Palantir run on-premises or air-gapped?

Yes. Palantir’s Apollo deploys and updates its platforms in the major clouds, on-premises and in disconnected, air-gapped networks, including classified clouds without network access. Choosing an alternative is therefore a decision about cost, dependence and scope, not about whether on-premises deployment is possible.

Does VDF AI replace Palantir Foundry’s Ontology?

No. VDF AI is an AI agent platform, not a data integration platform. It connects to databases such as PostgreSQL, SQL Server, Oracle and SAP HANA and to document sources, and agents query them in place. Organisations that need a unified operational data model keep a data platform for that and use VDF AI for the governed AI work on top.
