Self-Hosted Writer Alternative
WRITER is an enterprise AI platform for agentic work. WRITER Agent carries out multi-step tasks from a plain-language request, Playbooks turn those tasks into repeatable workflows, and AI Studio is where IT builds, connects and supervises agents, alongside Knowledge Graph retrieval, connectors, and apps for Slack, Teams and meetings. Agents run on Writer’s own Palmyra models (Palmyra X6 is the default; X5 and X4 are scheduled for deprecation on 14 December 2026), and since December 2025 they can also use models from Amazon Bedrock. Writer describes managed, multi-cloud deployment including a dedicated private cloud, and says it does not train its models on customer data (verified October 2026).
Why enterprises look beyond Writer
Writer’s homepage leads with marketing, sales and support teams, and the platform has grown from AI writing into agents that run whole tasks on Writer’s own family of models. Buyers who reach the alternatives stage are usually weighing three things: whether a dedicated private cloud run by Writer satisfies their data rules, whether they want their agents tied to one vendor’s model line, and whether the platform should also reach finance, IT and operations work that sits far from content.
Managed hosting only
Writer’s security page describes managed, multi-cloud options and a dedicated private cloud, all run by Writer; it does not describe an install on your own servers or in an air-gapped network. For defence suppliers, public bodies and some banks, a vendor-operated environment is the line they cannot cross.
One model line to plan around
Writer’s agents are built on Palmyra, and its model documentation shows how quickly that line moves: X5 and X4 retire in December 2026, and the medical and finance models were deprecated in July 2026. Bedrock access widens the choice, but every option is still a hosted model, whereas open weights on your own GPUs change only when you decide.
Centred on go-to-market work
Writer’s product and solution pages focus on marketing, sales and support. Organisations that want one governed agent platform for IT operations, finance close, compliance reviews and engineering as well look for databases, internal APIs, MCP tools and multi-agent workflows with approvals at the core of the design.
When Writer is the right choice
An honest alternative page tells you when not to migrate. Stay with Writer when:
- Your main use is brand-consistent content and go-to-market agents for marketing, sales and support teams, where Writer’s Playbooks fit out of the box.
- A dedicated private cloud managed by Writer meets your data requirements, and you would rather not operate GPUs.
- You want a one-million-token context model maintained by its vendor, and Palmyra performs well on your own documents.
Writer → VDF AI, capability by capability
| Capability | Writer | VDF AI (self-hosted) |
|---|---|---|
| Agents | WRITER Agent for multi-step tasks; Playbooks for repeatable workflows | Governed agents built in a guided wizard and composed into multi-agent workflows |
| Models | Palmyra X6 by default; Amazon Bedrock models since December 2025 | Open-weight models on your GPUs or approved cloud APIs, chosen per agent |
| Knowledge | Knowledge Graph retrieval over connected sources | Private RAG indexed on your servers and filtered by each user’s source permissions |
| Chat experience | Web app, WRITER for Slack and Teams, WRITER Meet | VDF AI Chat with document upload, code execution, HTML artifacts and diagrams |
| Deployment | Managed, multi-cloud, including a dedicated private cloud | On-premises, a private cloud you operate, or air-gapped |
| Training on your data | Writer states it does not train on customer data | No vendor model involved at all when inference runs on local models |
| Governance | Agent supervision, central approval and global guardrails in AI Studio | RBAC on every plan, human approval gates and an immutable audit log per run |
How teams move off Writer
Inventory the Writer agents and Playbooks in use, grouped by team, and note which rely on brand voice rules, style guides or templates you will need to carry across.
Install VDF AI in your data centre or private cloud, connect Microsoft Entra ID for sign-in, and load style guides, product facts and approved messaging into a private knowledge base.
Rebuild the busiest content and research agents on an open-weight model, then extend to IT, finance or compliance workflows that were never part of the Writer rollout.
Compare outputs side by side with Writer for a month, have editors score them, and time the cutover before the Palmyra X5 and X4 deprecation date if your agents still use those models.
Writer alternative questions
Can Writer be self-hosted?
Writer’s security page lists managed, multi-cloud deployment options including a dedicated private cloud, and its model documentation covers access through the Writer API and Amazon Bedrock; neither describes an on-premises or air-gapped installation (checked October 2026). Some older Palmyra models were published with open weights on Hugging Face, but they are not the models behind WRITER Agent today.
Does Writer train on our data?
Writer states that it does not train its models on customer data, user inputs or outputs, and describes a zero data retention approach that keeps data only as long as the platform needs it. Processing still happens in an environment Writer manages, so for regulated teams the remaining question is location and operator rather than training.
What replaces Palmyra in a self-hosted setup?
An open-weight model you serve yourself. Qwen, Mistral, Llama and DeepSeek families cover drafting, summarising and analysis; choose by testing on your own content, and size GPUs for the model and the number of concurrent users. VDF AI Router lets you register several models and send each request to the one that fits, within your approved-model list.
Can VDF AI keep our brand voice?
Yes, through grounding rather than a branded model. Style guides, approved messaging and past content go into a private knowledge base, each content agent carries instructions and Agent Skills that apply them, and an editor approves output before anything is published.
