Sovereign AI

AI operated under a specific jurisdiction's legal, infrastructure, and data-residency requirements.

What is Sovereign AI?

Sovereign AI is the practical answer to “our data cannot leave the country / cannot leave our control.” It usually combines on-prem or sovereign-cloud deployment, private retrieval, and approved local or jurisdiction-bound models. See the AI Agent Security & Data Sovereignty pillar for the zero-trust architecture, and Sovereign AI with VDF AI for the product perspective.

Why it matters for on-premise & regulated AI

Sovereign AI became a board-level topic when governments demonstrated they can order model providers to cut access. True sovereignty has three layers: open-weight models you possess, infrastructure within your jurisdiction, and an operating platform with no mandatory external dependency. Many “sovereign cloud” offerings deliver the second layer only — the model and control plane still answer to a foreign provider.
