Decision Traceability
The ability to reconstruct, after the fact, why an agent or model produced a given output.
What is Decision Traceability?
Decision traceability ties outputs back to the inputs, retrieved sources, tool calls, and model selection that produced them. Without it, “why did the system decide that?” has no answer. See Decision Traceability for Audits.
What is an example of Decision Traceability?
For a denied application, a reviewer can identify the rule applied, source record used, model and workflow versions, confidence signals, human reviewer, and final reason communicated to the applicant.
How is Decision Traceability different from related concepts?
Traceability reconstructs the chain of events and evidence. Explainability describes why a result is understandable to a particular audience. A system can be well traced yet still require better explanations for affected people.
What should enterprises evaluate for Decision Traceability?
- Give each execution a correlation ID that persists across retrieval, model, tool, and approval services.
- Record source and policy versions, not just final text, so the historical decision can be reconstructed accurately.
- Design reviewer views for auditors, operators, affected users, and engineers because each needs different detail.
